NATHAN DAVIS

bones

lyrics and music by Nathan Davis

I can see wind over water,
And I can stare into the sun.
I could fly farther and farther away,
But I've never been good on the run.

Something's alive in me baby,
Warmer than daylight at dawn.
Just like the words of our mothers were true
We don't listen til those words are gone.

So I'll sleep with the devil tonight,
Wake up with dirt in my eyes,
Pray to somebody to make it all right,
And head for the next county line.
I feel like the last man alive
Cause these lights have been blinding my eyes,
So I'll rest my head on this pillow of bones,
Cause it's better than sleeping alone.

You say our lives are our own-
Not an existence on loan.
The path that I've chosen to take has been longer
Than any road I've ever known.
A half empty bottle can't save you
When you're living to howl at the moon.
In a world that's demanding, I stay in the fight
With a wrecking ball aimed at my tomb.

So I'll sleep with the devil tonight,
Wake up with dirt in my eyes,
Pray to somebody to make it all right,
And head for the next county line.
I feel like the last man alive
Cause these lights have been blinding my eyes,
So I'll rest my head on this pillow of bones,
Cause it's better than sleeping alone.

Tell me what I'm gonna say when it's over;
Tell me where to hide my eyes from the sun.
Where you supposed to go when you're Nero
And Rome's burning down?
Where do you, where do you run?

This was a bare bones :-) recording done spontaneously one night in John's studio, with Fran Dyer providing some background percussion, made solely to preserve the new song until further work could be done. John Custer produced the song in its final version, adding all the other artists' work.

Neal Chapman: leslie guitars, verb guitars, keys and bass
Jessica Mashburn: backing vocals second verse
Fran Dyer: percussion
Bill Eagan: drums
